May 2020

For the Spring 2020 semester, I was an intern for Longwood Athletics as we ran live broadcasts for the Big South Network on ESPN+. I worked alongside Director of Video Operations, Ian Jett, along with other interns and workers who I have come to know very well at Longwood University. My biggest accomplishments throughout this internship were being one of the more reliable people for operating both graphics and cameras, as well as improving at setting up and breaking down the equipment for each game. Compared to the seven games that I worked in the fall of 2019, I believe that I improved immensely in my camerawork. There were so many minor aspects of the work that I did not learn until this past semester. Small things such as tricks that people learn to hold the camera a certain way, or reviewing past highlights, went a long way for each day that I came into work. Another aspect of this internship that I was really grateful for was signing up to film highlights for other sports such as tennis, baseball and softball, and lacrosse. For each sport besides tennis, filming highlights allowed me to get used to the nature of the sport before the pressure of a live broadcast was added. Along with the pressure being taken away, filming with not as much equipment is always less strenuous. By the time I filmed my last tennis game for highlights, I was truly enjoying the process of filming for that sport, compared to when I started not knowing anything about the true rules of tennis. In the future I would like to try to experiment with editing more highlight videos for tennis or lacrosse. I was introduced to tennis so late in the semester before COVID-19 hit, that I was not able to explore that curiosity with editing videos for that sport. I hope to continue this job into the 2020-21 academic year and get more comfortable with other positions as time progresses.
